The air we breathe is more than just a mixture of gases; it's a complex cocktail of pollutants, and one of the most insidious among them is ultrafine particles (UFPs). These microscopic particles, produced primarily by vehicle exhaust, have the potential to penetrate deep into our lungs and bloodstream, contributing to a range of serious health issues, including heart and lung disease. Now, a new study led by McGill researchers offers a glimmer of hope: a shift to cleaner transportation could prevent thousands of premature deaths in Montreal and Toronto by significantly reducing UFP pollution.
What makes this finding particularly intriguing is the focus on UFPs, which are not currently regulated despite growing evidence linking them to increased mortality risk. Most Canadians are exposed to UFPs daily, and the study highlights the urgent need for action. The research team modeled various scenarios, considering real-world emission and climate plans in Toronto and Montreal, including targets for electric vehicle (EV) adoption. The results are striking: the most ambitious scenario could prevent around 1,100 premature deaths in Montreal and over 2,500 in Toronto, totaling more than 3,600 across both cities.
This ambitious scenario involves rapid EV adoption, reaching nearly half of all vehicles in Toronto by 2030 and nearly 100% by 2040. It also includes accelerated retirement of older, heavy-duty vehicles, particularly pre-2007 diesel trucks, and reduced overall traffic levels. Even without the full EV adoption, the study found that keeping traffic levels steady and retiring older diesel trucks could still prevent over 3,300 UFP-related deaths across both cities.
The impact of cleaner air from reduced vehicle emissions would be most significant in neighborhoods with higher proportions of low-income households, immigrants, and visible minorities, often located near major roads. This finding underscores the importance of targeted policies to address the disproportionate health impacts of pollution in these communities.
